I know exactly what a throttle body cable is, but I didn't think newer vehicles had those any more. EFI engines don't use them. I do remember on my mom's old 76 Buick Skylark, that froze one day while I was at school and the temps were -40. Even though it the block heater was plugged in, either the cord was not working or it made no difference; that poor car revved it's camshaft to death. I limped it over to pick up my brothers from school, but that was the end for it. That engine was one that didn't have many of them made so parts were pretty much non-existent even by 1991.

My car shop told me they don't make them anymore either!! Mine's not as old as your mom's, but it is a 1998 Volvo!! Glad I can still find parts for it...

I qualify for an antique car registration at this point!

Ha. Saskatchewan antique cutoff year is 1988 now, permanently. Funny it had that though, because anything I have owned other than early 90's trucks has all been EFI.

Wacky!! I don’t know why Volvo’s, known for safety, would be behind on something like that! But it is over a quarter-century old!!

The first and only car I’ve bought!

Well, I wouldn't call the throttle body cable anything related to safety; that particular part of car manufacture mostly relates to crash safety rather than how it runs. Brakes would certainly fall under the safety part, but of course there is the maintenance thereof to consider, so maybe your shop hadn't checked them when it was last in for any service? I'm married to a mechanic, and my dad was a very good one, and my brothers all know their way around all sorts of equipment too, so I have learned by proxy LOL.

Wow, that's a scary moment you had thankfully you lived to tell the tale. - I had the brakes on my car fail once, but nothing as bad as what you must have gone through.

Brake failure! I don’t know, that sounds equally, if not more terrifying! Glad we’re all alive at this point!
